Rachael Mahaffey, born Kingston, NY 1975 Artist and illustrator, I was born in upstate New York, along the Hudson River. I grew up with two older sisters and a younger brother. In 1996, I moved to Charleston South Carolina to be near my parents, who had previously moved to the south. Here, I raised my daughter as a single mom until I married in 2001. Shortly after, my husband adopted my daughter making us a complete family. I started drawing at an early age and many of my school note books had “doodles” covering the margins. Through high school I kept many sketch pads which I still have to this day. In April 2004, I graduated from Art Instruction School. After illustrating my first published book in 2005, I began working with Booksurge Publishing Company as an illustrator for children’s books. I have been a member and supporter of the Charleston Artist Guild since 2005. In addition I use my creativity and time to volunteer with different organizations such as Low Country Orphan Relief and the Charleston Animal Society.
